90-92 injectors are "pintle-style". This means there is a rod(pintle) that is pulled up by an electromagnet to allow fuel to flow out.93+ are "disc-style". The pintle was replaced by a rotating disc. (more accurate) Pintle-style had a glaring weakness in top-end which is called "floating" which basically meant that they could stay partially open when they should be closed and vice versa because of the nature of the vertical shaft movement.
The underlying design flaw was not noticed until later because Ethanol wasn't as prominent in fuel. the "Early-style" injectors seem to have a problem with Ethanol allowing breakdowns in the coils/corrosion to form. The above is likely exacerbated buy the fact that some moron on the design team thought it was a good idea to leave 12V live to one connector on each injectors at ALL times. (They are "ground controlled" by the ECU, meaning the ECU opens a path to ground to fire them) Make sure that you do the "12V switched mod", there are several if you don't have a new-style harness. New-style are preferred because old-style are DESTINED to fail prematurely. How can you tell which injectors you have? Easy: "Old-style" injectors have square connectors. "New-Style" injectors have oval connectors. This is generally true of other places on the motor *helping to identify year. (ie, CAS, PTU - they have oval connectors when newer OR upgraded to new harness and parts) The only way to really tell on the whole motor is to look at the lower plenum, they changed the shape of the ports. (NOT EASY TO GET TO - I'd say who cares?) Difference in cc's? Old to new, still the same, 370cc.
You want to go bigger? That's a good idea - IF your build path takes you there. GOOD large injectors can be tuned to run fairly smoothly even on tame builds. BAD injectors make cars run like shit no matter what. OEM injectors can run cars with mostly stock parts, some increased PSI, and a few other mods on a good tune no problem. Make sure you talk about where you want to go if you're looking at injector sizes.
